For a more complete picture of activity this War Diary should be read in conjunction with the 70th Infantry Brigade War Diary for the same month.

3rd May 1941

The fishing season was now in full swing, with excellent trout fishing available in the area. The Officers of the Battalion were invited out by locals.

A Battalion Dance was well patronised by the local “Stulkas” – “the entente grows”.

4th May 1941

Four Officers went out deep-sea fishing and “brought in enough cod to supply all the Garrison messes”.

5th May 1941

Six reinforcements arrived from the Infantry Training Centre. (Although it is not specified, it is assumed that this was the Regimental Infantry Training Centre No 4 at Brancepeth. Unfortunately the War Diary does not identify the men by name, nor can they be individually identified from the Enlistment Books, as Battalion postings are not usually recorded).

14th May 1941

Mail arrived – some well out of date. (It was some time before the mail deliveries became regular and reasonably frequent and this produced a regular stream of complaints).

28th May 1941

A further dance was held successfully.
