|Unit=Joined The Durham Light Infantry, no enlistment date given but his Regimental Number implies very early May 1939.  Posted ? 6th Battalion DLI.  Posted 10th Battalion DLI - probably 1/9/1939.  Served with the B.E.F. in France.  Posted as Missing, presumed KILLED in ACTION 20/5/40.  (Enlistment Book has an entry showing PoW 12/7/40, but this has been deleted - presumably clerical error - however a report stating that he had been reported as being a P.o.W. appeared in the Auckland Chronicle on 1/8/1940 while the 11/7/1940 edition had him as reported missing).

A report that Pte Brown had been reported "Missing" appeared in the Auckland Chronicle of 11th July 1940, so it would appear that his remains had, at that point, not been recovered to the point of a formal report to the Protecting Power having been made.  Work will be done using the archive materiaj from the original interment to see if an explanation can be derived
