Age 91 at the time of his death.
Unit Enlisted in The Durham Light Infantry in Crook, aged 17 (lied about his true age) in Spring 1939. Posted to 6th Battalion DLI. Posted to 10th Battalion DLI - probably 1/9/1939. Training intensified, including leaning to drive at South Shields. Could not join the rest of the Battalion with the B.E.F. in France in April 1940 as he was still an "immature", so was transferred to the "Divisional Details" in Crook under Captain Wilkinson. However, he was part of one of the final troop movements to France, but, as the conflict had already escalated, did not get further than Le Havre, where he was involved in driving a Carrier engaged in unloading material on the Docks. Evacuated to the UK. Joined the 10th Battalion at Okehampton. Hospitalised for three weeks with Appendicitis. Served Iceland. Served Normandy - played an active role in the Rauray battle. Posted to 6th Battalion DLI on the disbandment of 10th Battalion.
