INTRODUCTION

The period spent by the Brigade in Northern France and Belgium began with the initial movement as part of the 23rd Division to act as part of the Labour Forces, building airfields in particular, in April and May 1940, then switches to their role as part of the defences against the Axis onslaught - including the catastrophic ambush by Panzer Division elements at FICHEUX and MERCATEL on 20th May 1940 - and finally the route towards the evacuation at Dunkirk.

The various towns and villages mentioned in the War Diaries were visited as far as possible and are listed below. Where no visit was able to be made, the Wikipedia encyclopaedia entry for the place concerned is made the subject of a hyperlink on the relevant page.
