Unit Private Milburn had WW1 service, 27/2/1915 - 15/1/1919, firstly in the Durham Light Infantry as Number 19/295 and then in the 5th London Regiment as 45304 and finally in the 5th (City of London) Battalion, (London Rifle Brigade) as Number 307351 and is understood to have been wounded, though this has not yet been confirmed. Enlisted in The Durham Light Infantry as a Territorial in the 6th Battalion on 4/7/1925 at Consett, aged 31. Discharged 9/10/1938 under TA Regulations Para 204 (2). Joined the 41st (Durham) National Defence Company before the outbreak of the Second World War.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission have confirmed that, because Private Milburn was killed before the official declaration of War, even though he was on duty, armed and in uniform, his death is not included on their database an a War casualty. As far as is known, his grave does not have a CWGC headstone, though this is to be further investigated. His funeral took place on Saturday 2nd September 1939 at Medomsley Church. Newspaper reports of his Inquest and Funeral are set out below.
