Posted probably to the 12th Battalion DLI on embodiment - September 1939. Transferred to the Black Watch 1/2/1940 and posted to the 1st Tyneside Scottish. Served with the B.E.F. in Northern France. Captured at Ficheux 20/5/1940 and made a Prisoner of War (capture card dated 9/6/1940). Repatriated to the UK in 1945. Posted ? Battalion Black Watch. Discharged under King's Regulations 1940 Para 390 (xvi) on 13/1/46.

Home address Worked as a heavy labourer in a Brickworks. 1939 General Register showed he lived at 139, Durham Rd. Spennymoor, with his Father - William Arthur Pickford and his Mother Esther M Pickford - nee Hepple. In the Register entry he is not shown as being in the Forces so he probably enlisted in Autumn 1939. Married Maria Szoltun in 1947.
