Thanks to the Archivist of the Glider Pilot Regiment we know that....S/Sgt Annand took part in Operation Mallard, the second part of Operation Neptune, on the afternoon of 6 June 1944.  His first pilot was Staff Sergeant G. Jones and they took off from RAF Brize Norton, thier chalk number is unknown.  Their load was either the Armoured Recce Regiment, No 6 Airlanding Brigade HQ or Administration Transports, heading from Landing Zone "N".  They arrived at their target successfully.

Took part in Operation Market Garden in September 1944.  His second pilot was Sergeant T.E. Davey and they took off from RAF Manston in Horsa glider chalk number 876, towed by an Albemarle of either 296 or 297 Squadron RAF.  They were part of the Second Lift, which took off on 18 September.  Their load was elements of No.2 Battery, 1st Air-landing Light Regiment, Royal Artillery, heading from Landing Zone "X".  They arrived from their target successfully, but at and unknown point during the subsequent fighting, John was captured and taken as a prisoner of war at Stalag IIB, Fallingbostel, Lower Saxony.  This Camp was liberated by British troops on 16 April 1945.
