|Unit=Enlisted 17/11/1914 as Regimental Number 1019 in 25th Royal Northumberland Fusiliers (3rd Tyneside Scottish), giving his age as 18 years six months on attestation, for service as a Bugler only. He was posted to 22nd RNF (2nd Tyneside Irish) as Number 25/1427 on 8/5/1915. He was then discharged in October 1915 under Para 392 (ii) King's Regulations as having been irregularly enlisted - under age. He subsequently served in the Durham Light Infantry, reaching the rank of Corporal, The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, as Regimental Number 26746 and then in the Machine Gun Corps as Number 6979. He was demobbed on 26/2/19, having earned the Victory Medal and the British War Medal. He was Attested on joining the Territorial Force on 12/3/20 in Gateshead age 24 and was described as being a Machine Man. He signed up for an initial 3 yrs in the DLI, and re-enlisted on 19/10/22 for a further 2 yrs. He almost certainly continued his TA service with the 9th Bn DLI. It is likely that he was posted to 12th DLI and then transferred to the Black Watch and was posted to 1 TS on 1/2/40, Prisoner of War (BW Book 358 No 30 -See BW Book 358 3/75), Discharged KRs 1940 Para 380 (xvi) 20/1/46 (See BW Book 6/87).
