Unit Enlisted in The Durham Light Infantry in Crook, aged 17 (lied about his true age) in Spring 1939. Posted to 6th Battalion DLI. Posted to 10th Battalion DLI - probably 1/9/1939. Could not join the rest of the Battalion with the B.E.F. in France in April 1940 as he was still an "immature", so was transferred to the "Home Details", but was part of one of the final troop movements to France, but, as the conflict had already escalated, did not get further than Le Havre, where he was involved in driving a Carrier engaged in unloading material on the Docks. Evacuated to the UK. Joined the 10th Battalion
