The Citation for Sapper Furzer's award can be found in The National Archives at File Reference WO 373/52/172 and reads as follows:-

"On 25 Sep 44 at about 1100 hrs a platoon of 294 Fd Coy was preparing to bridge the ANTWERP - TURNHOUT Canal North of OOSTMALLE. When enemy machine gun fire brought down on the bridging site wounded the Platoon Comd in both legs a volunteer was called for to fetch in the wounded officer.

With complete disregard for danger Spr FURZER crawled forward to the place where his officer lay, dressed his wounds, and with the aid of the Pl Sgt carried him back on a door through the defences covering the canal.

Though still under enemy observed fire he returned again to the bridging site to support the Pl Sgt who was continuing the bridging recce and, though exceeding the demands of duty, remained, careless of his personal safety, to assist the NCO.

By this most outstanding deed, the preparations for bridging were completed unhindered and the canal crossing assumed."

Some information on this Page has been extracted from the Commemorative Booklet, prepared by Major Langley, covering the period from D-Day to VE Day in addition to that extracted from the War Diaries. There are issues around the possible duplication of names which remain to be clarified.
