Unit Enlisted in The Durham Light Infantry 17/1/1940 at Darlington. Posted to the 10th Battalion DLI. Posted to Training Camp. Underwent Basic Training. Served with the B.E.F. in Northern France. Evacuated at the end of May 1940 and proceeded to Launceston. Served Iceland. Served Normandy. On the disbandment of the 10th Battalion at the end of August 1944 he was posted to the 8th Battalion DLI. Reported Missing 11/9/1944. Recovered and charged with Desertion. Subjected to a Field General Court Martial and sentenced to 3 years Penal Servitude of which the first two years were to be served in a Military Prison, though he was not to be returned to the UK. The sentence was suspended on 2/2/1945 and he was posted to the 101 Reinforcement Group, having served only 99 days of his sentence. He was returned to duty on 4/2/1945 and then transferred to the Highland Light Infantry on 7/2/1945 and posted to their 5th Battalion. He returned to the UK and was relegated to the Class Z Reserve on 8/7/1946 and demobilised. He was discharged from his Reserve commitment on 6/2/1954.
