187 Field Ambulance - War Diary March 1944
1 March 1944 – Thetford.
187th Field Ambulance concentrated for Exercise Remedy II at Hempnall, South of Harwich. The Exercise was very instructive and brought out many points of equipment scales and organisation.
DDMS 30th Corps visited the Unit in the field at Denton.
3 March 1944 – Thetford.
16:30 hours. Return from Exercise Remedy II.
5 March 1944 – Thetford.
Conference ADMS on Exercise Remedy II.
8 March 1944 – Thetford.
14:00 hours. Exercise Star – a Brigade Exercise to practice a night attack. Sections and Advanced Dressing Station (skeleton) on British and German sides commanded by NCO’s. Officers act as advisers and umpires.
10 March 1944 – Thetford.
09:00 hours. Exercise Star ends.
12 March 1944 – Thetford.
Lecture on Surgery in Forward Areas by Major Jacks of No 6 Field Surgery Unit at 187th Field Ambulance, attended by representatives of other medical units.
14 March 1944 – Thetford.
Visit from Brigadier Philips DMS 2nd Army.
15 – 16 March 1944 – Thetford.
Visit to demonstration of Field Dressing Station and Field Surgery Unit at Cambridge. New Zealand 40 by 40 shelter area. It is the solution to the problem of cover.
18 March 1944 – Thetford.
Visit of O.C. 17 Field Dressing Station to discuss proposed new organisation of Medical Services – combination of Field Dressing Station and HQ Field Ambulance to form a Main Dressing Station.
20 March 1944 – Thetford.
Visit of Corps Psychiatrist – lecture to all Medical Officers of the Brigade Group.
22 March 1944 – Thetford.
Exercise Stag – Section attached to 1 Tyneside Scottish.
23 March 1944 – Thetford.
Exercise Stag – Section attached to 10 DLI.
24 March 1944 – Thetford.
Exercise Stag. Practice relief of own Battalion by other Regimental Aid Post and Casualty Clearing Point – hand over successfully carried out. Very few exercise casualties made by umpires.
25 March 1944 – Thetford.
Further waterproofing of vehicles trials at Great Yarmouth.
30 March 1944 – Thetford.
14:00 hours. Lecture and demonstration by Corps Transfusion Officer.
