70th Infantry Brigade War Diary December 1942.
1st December 1942
The Mobile Gas Chamber commenced a tour of all the units in the Brigade Group.
2nd December 1942
The Anti-Tank Circus arrived from 88 Anti-Tank Regiment in order to ascertain the standard reached by unit Anti-Tank Platoons – one complete day being spent with each unit.
3rd December 1942
The Brigade Commander and Brigade Major attended the 49 Division Discussion and Cloth Model – Attack Part II – held at THE BARN, WHITNEY.
4th December 1942
Lieutenant Degrelle, Belgian Forces, began an attachment to Brigade HQ.
7th December 1942
Captain J.J. Turnbull, Royal Norfolk Regiment, began an attachment to Brigade HQ for instruction in Staff duties.
8th – 12th December 1942
Units concentrated on intensive Company training – the major portion of all personnel in the Brigade Group completed their classifications on the Open Range. 11th DLI held Motor Transport exercises.
13th December 1942
The Officers commanding all units in the Brigade Group attended a Mountain Warfare conference held at Brigade HQ.
14th December 1942
The Brigade Transport Officer and unit representatives began a three-day reconnaissance of proposed new locations in the CARMARTHEN area.
15th – 16th December 1942
The Brigade Commander and Brigade Major attended a 49 Division Cloth Model Exercise on the principles of Mountain Warfare, held at THE BARN, WHITNEY.
Captain W.L. Bell, Gloucestershire Regiment, arrived at Brigade HQ pending appointment as Staff Captain.
17th December 1942
The Brigade Cross-Country Run over a distance of approximately 6 miles was won by 1st Tyneside Scottish.
18th December 1942
The Brigade Commander and Brigade Major completed a reconnaissance of Base Camp and Mountain Warfare training Area, near LLANDOVERY.
Captain J.J. Turnbull M.C. was posted to the Kendal Sub-Area.
19th December 1942
The Brigade Group Soccer Finals were played – 10th DLI being the winners.
20th December 1942
A Weapon Training Inspector from the Small Arms School, Hythe, completed a five-day tour of the Brigade Group.
21st December 1942
A Brigade Cloth Model Exercise took place at which C.Os. represented the Brigade Commander and drew appropriate steps from the respective Battalions.
23rd December 1942
Lieutenant Degrelle, Belgian Forces, completed his attachment to Brigade HQ.
25th December 1942
The Brigade Commander visited all units in the ULVERSTON area. A full Church Parade was held at Brigade HQ at 10:30 hours.
26th December 1942
178 Field Regiment left 49 Division and moved to join their new Division at FELIXSTOWE.
27th December 1942
Advance Parties left for the South Wales area.
28th December 1942
2/Lieutenant R.E. Evans, Royal Signals, was posted to Brigade HQ as Signal Section Officer.
29th – 30th December 1942
Preparations for the forthcoming move were made – Carriers and heavy baggage were loaded on to trains.
31st December 1942
Captain J.R. Haslegrave was posted to the Staff College, Camberley. Captain W.L. Bell of the Gloucestershire Regiment took over as Staff Captain, 70th Infantry Brigade.
