1st November 1939

Training carried on throughout the Battalion.

2nd November 1939

2/Lt W.A. Husband proceeded to York on an Intelligence Course, 2nd to 10th November 1939.

6th November 1939

Training carried on throughout the Battalion.

Lt and Adjutant C.G. Winter proceeded to the Scotch Corner Hotel, Darlington on a Course on Military Law 6th to 9th November 1939.

9th November 1939

Training carried on throughout the Battalion.

2/Lts E.W. Harrison, G.E.Wood and Sgt Lawton T. (4441604) proceeded to Scotch Corner Hotel, Darlington on a Troop and Platoon Leader’s Course from 9th to 23rd November 1939.

14th November 1939

Training carried on throughout the Battalion.

2/Lts J. Welford, C.A. Smallwood, A. Waggott, J. Cook and E.S. Newport attended an intensive Officers’ Course run by 70th Infantry Brigade, 10th to 18th November 1939.

17th November 1939

Training carried on throughout the Battalion.

Battalion Parade – inspected by the Commanding Officer.

20th November 1939

2/Lt R.A. Johnson assumed duties as Battalion Gas Officer vice 2/Lt J.H. Rowell.

22nd November 1939

2/Lt J. R. Ennis assumed duties as Officer in command of the Battalion Carrier Platoon.

25th November 1939

“A” Company of this Battalion relieved the 8th Bn Royal Northumberland Fusiliers at the following Vulnerable Points on the River Tyne:-

King Edward Bridge

High Level Bridge

Swing Bridge

together with a detachment for Port Security. This was completed at 11:00 hours by 3 Officers and 84 Other Ranks, including 7 NCOs and 35 other Ranks from HQ Company.

27th November 1939

“C” Company relieved a Company of 10th Battalion The Durham Light Infantry as First Line Troops under the Civil Defence Scheme at 10:00 hours and “D” Company was detailed at 6 hours notice to replace “C” Company in the event of that Company being called forward on traffic control duties.

An administrative inspection of the Battalion took place by Major-General W.H. Herbert C.B, C.M.G., D.S.O. Commander, 23rd (N) Division.

28th to 30th November 1939

Training carried on throughout the Battalion.

The photograph below is dated November 1939 and includes Private Michael PHILLISKIRK. The identity of the Company of the Battalion is not yet known but research will continue to try and ascertain that. The image was apparently taken outside the billets occupied by the Company.
