70th Infantry Brigade War Diary November 1942.
1st November 1942
At 06:30 hours units of the Brigade Group began moving by road to Winter locations. All vehicles reached the Staging Camp at PRESTON by 22:30 hours.
3rd November 1942
The final stage of the move took place and units arrived in the DALTON – ULVERSTON area during the afternoon.
Divisional Cloth Model Exercise No 1 was held at THE BARN, WHITNEY and was attended by the Brigade Commander, Brigade Major, and the C.Os. of the 1st Tyneside Scottish and 11th DLI.
4th November 1942
The Brigade Commander and Brigade Major arrived in the new Brigade area.
5th November 1942
Camps were visited and extensive enquiries made regarding Ranges and Training Areas. The Brigade Commander proceeded on leave.
Lt Col E.V. Lang left 10th DLI to take up an appointment as A.A. & Q.M.G. 9th Armoured Division.
7th – 8th November 1942
Work commenced on unit 100 yard Ranges and a Brigade 12-target Range. Units were located as follows:-
Brigade HQ – ULVERSTON
178 Field Regiment – ULVERSTON
10th DLI – DALTON-IN-FURNESS
11th DLI - DALTON-IN-FURNESS
1st TS - DALTON-IN-FURNESS
187 Field Ambulance – Near DALTON-IN-FURNESS
62 Troop Carrying Company – BARROW-IN-FURNESS. The War Diary does not mention the timing of the replacement of 55 Troop-Carrying Company RASC in support of the Brigade Group with 62 Troop Carrying Company.
70 Brigade Company RASC – BARROW-IN-FURNESS.
9th November 1942
The C.-in- C. Western Command visited the Brigade HQ and interviewed all prospective Staff College candidates. He visited the Battalion Camps at DALTON-IN-FURNESS.
10th November 1942
62 Troop Carrying Company moved from BARROW-IN-FURNESS to GRASMERE.
14th November 1942
The Brigade Commander attended a demonstration at ORFORD on the SNAKE method of clearing a passage through minefields and wire.
17th November 1942
A conference for all C.Os. was held at Brigade HQ.
18th November 1942
The Brigade Commander, Brigade Major, Staff Captain and Intelligence Officer left for the 49 Division Cloth Model Exercise. During the afternoon a T.E.W.T. was held outdoors.
20th November 1942
Lt Col Jefferies M.B.E. arrived and assumed command of 10th DLI.
22nd November 1942
The Pipe band of the 1st Tyneside Scottish headed the Civil Defence parade at BARROW-IN-FURNESS.
Two Companies of the 11th DLI acted as enemy to test the defence system of ULVERSTON area Home Guard.
23rd November 1942
The Brigade Commander held a conference of all C.Os. from the Brigade Group.
25th – 26th November 1942
49 Division Exercise “MONTE CARLO III” took place. 40 vehicles and 6 motorcycles completed the 50-mile circuit around Lake Windermere during daylight and darkness. (No specific details about the exercise were included in the file at The National Archives).
27th November 1942
There was a conference of all umpires taking part in the MILLOM airfield exercise.
29th November 1942
Two Companies of the 1st Tyneside Scottish acted as enemy and tested the Defence organisation in operation at MILLOM airfield.
30th November 1942
The Kendal Sub-Area Mobile Gas Chamber arrived and began a three-day programme within the Brigade Group.
The Brigade Cloth Model Exercise No 1 was held – three syndicates from units took part representing Brigade HQ.
