From 70 Brigade

The photograph below is from a collection of wartime images and was taken in 1943. It comes from the collection of Fridthor Eydal, Icelandic historian and author, who has been a major source of help in piecing together the story of 70th Infantry Brigade's time in Iceland, and to whom considerable thanks are due.

A view of Balbo's Camp in the winter of 1943.

The photograph shows clearly the strategy used to protect the Nissen Huts during the worst of the weather - namely to pile earth round the perimeter of the individual huts in an attempt to weight them down, and prevent their blowing over in the fierce gales experienced during that time of year in Iceland.
