Unit Joined The Durham Light Infantry. Enlisted on 20/3/1929, in the Territorial Army, for 8 years. Posted ? 8th Bn DLI. Posted 11th Bn DLI, probably on 1/9/1939. Served B.E.F. Wounded and taken Prisoner of War on 22/06/1940 (PoW card shows 22/5/1940 - the later date my have been notification date) at St. Pol, France. Home address Father - Thomas Bailey. Mother - Frances Bailey. In the 1911 Census he was resident in Elswick, Northumberland. Married Mary Garden Bowater in Chester-Le-Street in October 1935. Following the marriage the couple lived in Birtley and had one child - Marie Bailey, who subsequently married Peter Henry White and had two daughters. He worked at Henley's Cable Facory in Birtley and was also a member of a Concert Party, continuing the sort of performances he had been involved in whilst in PoW Camp - probably including playing the harmonica, which his grandchildren recalled him doing at home..
