His World War One service appears to have been "Boy" service - perhaps as a bandsman? - with no mention of overseas duty. Re-enlisted in The Durham Light Infantry and allocated Regimental Number 4435655 - date of re-enlistment and subsequent service not yet known. Probably recalled to the Colours for the Second World War - hence the voyage from Canada? Discharged 2/9/1940 at Edinburgh on being Commissioned. Continued to serve in The Durham Light Infantry - granted an Emergency Commission as a Lt(QM) 3/9/1940. Posted to the 10th Bn DLI. Served Iceland. Transferred to the Somerset Light Infantry 20/5/1942. Relinquished Commission as Honorary Captain QM on grounds of disability 27/4/1946.

Home address Father - Barrett Thrift. Mother - Mrs Rebecca Thrift (nee Kelly) - listed as Next of Kin on attestation in 1916. In the 1911 Census he was listed as residing at 6 Railway View, Duckmead Lane East, Liss, Hampshire, England. Returned from Canada on the "Empress of Britain" arriving on 17 August 1939 - aged 37. No trace yet found of a marriage.
