War Diary 756th Field Company, Royal Engineers, July 1943

1 July 1943 Stourbridge.

08:00 hours. 756 Field Company, less 3 Platoon, with 294 Field Company RE, less one Platoon under Command, moves by Motor Transport to Halton Bridging Camp in Lancashire. All A.O.P. Carriers left at STOURBRIDGE with NCO and fifteen men as rear party. 3 Platoon of 756 Field Company moves from HALTON to LOUDOUN CASTLE CAMP, GALSTON, AYRSHIRE for work on mock-up German Company defensive locality near SORN.

2 to 18 July 1943 HALTON.

756 and 294 Field Companies, less one Platoon each, at HALTON Bridging Camp under command Major J R Grimsdell RE. 756 Field Company carry out bridging training to programme as at Appendices 15 and 17. All Motor Transport training separately to programme at Appendices 16 and 18. See Appendices 15 to 18 attached to War Diary. These Appendices were either not photographed at Kew, or were missing from the original War Diary file.

3 Platoon 756 Field Company building “mock-up” German position near SORN.

13 July 1943

1 Pioneer Platoon from 6th Duke of Wellington’s Regiment and 1 Infantry Platoon from 11th Royal Scots Fusiliers come under command C.O. 756 Field Company for work at SORN.

12 – 13 July 1943

Officer Commanding 756 Field Company with Officer in command of 2 Platoon visits 3 Platoon at GALSTON and recces Platoon locality to be built by 2 Platoon.

19 – 20 July 1943 HALTON.

756 Field Company moves by road from HALTON to LOUDOUN CASTLE CAMP, staging one night at St HADRIAN’s CAMP, CARLISLE.

21 July 1943 GALSTON.

2 Platoon starts work on “mock-up” position.

22 – 31 July 1943

2 and 3 Platoons on works as training programme at Appendices 19 and 20. See Appendices 19 and 20 attached to War Diary. These Appendices were either not photographed at Kew, or were missing from the original War Diary file.

26 July 1943

Rear party from Stourbridge under Second-in-Command rejoins main body at GLASTON.
