10 August 1941 – Artun – Reykjavik.

Serious fire in the billet of 1/9 Manchesters at REYDARFJORDUR. 1 man killed. 1 seriously injured. Arms and equipment destroyed.

Research indicates that the man killed was 5621093 Private Leslie Lewis PARSONS of the Manchester Regiment. To read his CWGC Commemorative Record please click here.

11 August 1941

Brigadier Greeg, Director of Training, War Office, arrived by air on visit of inspection. Albatross passenger plane seriously damaged on landing and air mail temporarily discontinued.

Leave trip “I” sailed for UK.

16 August 1941

Visit of Prime Minister, Mr Winston Churchill, to Iceland accompanied by Admiral Sir Dudley Pound, First Sea Lord, General Sir John Dill, C.I.G.S., Air Marshal Sir W Freeman, Sir Alexander Cadogan, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Lieut Franklin D Roosevelt and staffs.

Lt-Col Stewart appointed Assistant Director of Training with effect from 6/7/1941.

17 August 1941

G.O.C. issued Special Order of the Day.

21 August 1941

Major-General Fitzherbert, Inspector of RASC, visited Iceland on tour of inspection.

24 August 1941

Leave trip “J” sailed for UK.

Bishop of Aberdeen visited Iceland to hold Confirmation Services. 283 men confirmed.

25 August 1941

Movement Instruction No 2 issued.

27 August 1941

4 Officers, 15 Under-Officers and 24 Ratings, Naval Prisoners of War from Submarine, brought into Reykjavik and handed over to Iceland Force for safe custody.
