294 Army Field Company, Royal Engineers – week ending 3/8/1941 – see Appendix B attached.

4 August 1941

Force Signals Exercise No 8 due to start as from midnight 4/5 August.

5 August 1941

04:35 hours. Air Raid siren sounded. All Clear sounded about half an hour later.

6 August 1941

10:30 hours approximately. Force Signals Exercise No 8 finished.

Commander, Royal Engineers goes to Kaldadarnes, with Bomb Disposal Officer attached to this HQ, to investigate damage to Runway caused by bombs exploding in burnt-out aircraft. Two other unexploded 250lb anti-submarine bombs lying near Runways were removed and detonated by Bomb Disposal Officer.

7 August 1941

Conference on Force Exercise No 8.

11 August 1941

Leave personnel returned from UK.

Bomb Disposal Officer commenced series of lectures on bomb recognition to Infantry personnel of 70th Infantry Brigade.

12 August 1941

2/Lt Fox of this HQ leaves for UK to attend Course on Inglis Bridge.

13 August 1941

Commander, Royal Engineers goes to HVITANES.

Commander, Royal Engineers is invited to Force HQ to meet the Prime Minister and the Chief of the Imperial General Staff who arrived at REYJAVIK this morning.

The new establishment of this Headquarters, 79/WE/2928 (SD 3) came into effect as from 13 June 1941. The title appearing at the head of the War Diary will henceforward be :-
